PREP ROUNDUP | Crusader boys and girls basketball earn wins, Royals fall short to Panthers in overtime

BOYS BASKETBALL – WRIGHT COUNTY CONFERENCE

GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE 70, WATERTOWN-MAYER 65 (OT)

GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE: Kyle Christensen 26, Dane Schwirtz 14, Riley Ruzicka 6, Gabe Roepke 4, Gage Alsleben 3, Connor Kantack 6, Austin Barrett 8.

GLENCOE – A strong second-half push brought the game to overtime, but in the end, it was the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers who outlasted the visiting Royals for a 70-65 victory. Trailing by six at the half, the Royals used a second-half rally to push the game into overtime.

Chase Stock led the way for the Royals in the loss. He had a team-high 22 points in a breakthrough performance. Wes Burns also had a big game for the Royals with 17 points, while Will McBee added 11 points.

With the loss, the Royals fell to 5-7 overall on the season, and 0-2 in the Wright County Conference.

MAPLE GROVE – The Mayer Lutheran boys basketball continued their winning ways with an impressive 70-55 road victory against Heritage Christian. The Crusaders were in control from the start, picking up their third-straight win.

Baden Noennig continued to impress with a team-high 25 points. Senior Kobey Woolhouse added 16 points, while Brendan Feltmann was also in double figures with 12 points.

Mayer Lutheran moved to 10-3 on the season overall, and will look to make it four-straight wins Saturday night when they host section foe Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.

STILLWATER – A breakthrough performance from freshman Taylor Ebert wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs as they fell short in a 62-46 loss to St. Croix Prep on the road. Although the Bulldogs got a season-best performance from Ebert, they had just three players in the scoring column.

The Lions came out swinging in the first half, building a 16-point lead the break. The Bulldogs and Lions played an even second half, but the slow start and lack of production outside of the big three was too much to overcome.

Kayla Weinzierl added 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Marissa Radtke finished with 12. The Bulldogs will look to snap their two-game skid Thursday against Heritage Christian.

MAYER – A balanced attack offensively propelled the Crusaders to a 75-67 victory over the visiting Tigers on their home floor. Before the game, senior Mya Chmielewski was honored for becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer.

The Crusaders got off to another hot start, jumping out to a 10-2 lead to start the game. The Tigers fought their way back into it before the half to cut the deficit to justt three, but another big run by the Crusaders broke things open.

With Mayer Lutheran leading 15-12 with just over 13 minutes left in the first half, the Crusaders opened things up with a 13-2 run.

Despite being outscored in the second half, the Crusaders kept the Tigers at bay to snap their two-game skid and improve to 5-1 in the MN River Conference, and 8-6 overall. Five of Mayer Lutheran’s six losses have came against teams ranked in Class AA or A, including the No. 1 ranked team in Class A Lyle-Pacelli.

Sophomore Olivia Tjernagel had one of her best games of the season for the Crusaders in the win. She finished with a team-high 15 points while also grabbing six rebounds. Maddy Hucky added 12 points, and Sophie Heuer finished with 11 points. Mya Chmielewski was also in double figures with 10 points while also dishing out three assists.
