MAYER – For the second-straight season, the Mayer Lutheran football team will be looking to start the season 3-0. A win Friday night against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton will do just that.

After a 37-19 thrashing of United South Central last week, the Crusaders return home to face the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, who have started the season 0-2, come into the matchup with back-to-back tough losses.

In week one, the Bulldogs got doubled up by Kenyon-Wanamingo, one of two other teams undefeated in district play besides the Crusaders.

Looking for a bounce-back win in Week 2, the Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Bethlehem Academy by a score of 7-6.

The Crusaders come into the matchup red-hot. They’ve score 35 or more points in both of their games, which is the highest points per a game average for any team in the district.

The Crusaders have also been playing strong defense as well heading into Friday night. They are third in points allowed per a game with 12.5, with much of those points coming in garbage time late in games.

Branden Carlson and Matthew Menth have been big reasons for the hot start for the Crusaders. Carlson has already collected 300 total yards on offense, as well as four touchdowns.

Menth is all-around top player for the Crusaders. He’s been a force running the ball, as well as defensively. In just two games, Menth has two interception returns for a touchdown already.

Kickoff between the Crusaders and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. at Mayer Lutheran High School.
