HOWARD LAKE  – With the chances of a conference title gone, the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted boys basketball team had a chance to play spoilers Tuesday night when they hosted Holdingford. The Huskers, who sit atop the Central MN Conference, took care of business as they cruised to a 58-38 win on the road.

With Lakers leading 13-8 in the early going, the Huskers made their run. The Huskers scored 20 unanswered points to take a 15 point lead over the Lakers. The Lakers, who have struggled on offense their past few games, went scoreless for over seven minutes in the first half. Trailing by 15 in the final minutes of the half, Brad Bickmann kept the Lakers in it. Bickman knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Lakers within 12. Then at the buzzer, he knocked down a turnaround jump shot at the buzzer, bringing the Lakers within 10.

Bickman and the Lakers kept thing rolling to start the second half. On the first possession, Brock Bangasser found Chris Zander on a back cut for an easy basket. After getting on stop on defense, Cameron Decker made a layup, and the Lakers were within six points.

That’s as close as the Lakers would get though as their transition defense couldn’t stop the Huskers from getting easy buckets. Holdingford’s Tyson Patrick used an 8-0 run by himself, putting the Huskers up 43-26 with 10:57 to go.

Decker led the way with 14 points, five of which came from the free throw line. Bickmann added 10 points, while Bangasser added five points.
